Euchre Strategy: Tips to Win More Hands
Euchre rewards good counting and good partnership more than lucky cards. These tips help beginners and club players alike win more hands.
Calling trump
- Count your sure tricks. Both bowers plus one more trump is usually enough to order it up. Three trumps with an off-suit ace is a good call.
- As dealer, value the turned card. Picking up a bower or the ace of trump adds a sure trick to your hand.
- Next suit in round two. If the dealer turned down a red suit, the other red suit ("next") is often a strong call – the left bower is likely still out.
- Do not order your partner's dealer into a weak suit. Their pick-up already helps your team.
Leading
- Lead trump when your partner called it. It pulls the opponents' trumps and protects your partner's off-suit aces.
- Lead an off-suit ace when you hold one and your side did not make trump.
- Avoid leading into the maker's strength – leading trump against a maker usually helps them.
Playing as defender
- Count trumps. There are 7 trumps: the two bowers plus A, K, Q, 10 and 9 – some may be sitting in the kitty. Knowing how many are out tells you when your ace is safe.
- Save a trump for the last tricks if the makers have two tricks – one more euchres them.
- Do not trump your partner's winning trick.
Going alone
- Go alone with the right bower, the left bower and the ace of trump, or with four trumps and an off-suit ace.
- Late in the game (8 or 9 points) a loner can finish the game in one hand – and a failed loner usually costs only 2.
